Liu Zhengqiang has a Ph.D. in sociology and political science. His major fields of interest are in the sociology of law, mass petitions, and social governances. He has collected rich data relating to grassroots conflicts, social unrest and mass petitions, and has widely published scholarly works on these issues. He has also headed several projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Shanghai Social Science Fund. He serves as a council member of the Legal Sociology Committee under the Chinese Sociological Association.
